The game File Transfer over Local Network feature allows you to transfer game files from your local network from other PCs or Steam Deck (or ROG Ally). This saves you time since local networks run on 100 Mbps at minimum, and faster if you have gigabit routers and at least CAT5e network cables or WiFi 5 or WiFi 6 routers, which can reach 500Mbps to 1Gbps. Needless to say, it also saves you internet data if you’re on a data plan. You still get the same files – but from your own PC instead of Steam’s servers.
Requirements
- Both the source and destination, be it a desktop PC, laptop, or Steam Deck, must be turned on, logged in to the same Steam accounts, and connected to the same local network.
- The game on the source PC must be installed and up-to-date.
- No Steam games should be running on the source machine.
- Updates and downloads of other games must be stopped on both sides.
- The source must be on Steam desktop mode, not in Big Picture mode.
How To
1. Log in to the Steam client, click the Steam menu, and click Settings.
2. On the Steam settings window, go to the Downloads tab and turn on the Game File Transfer over Local Network option.
3. In the “Allow transfers from this device” dropdown menu, you can select Only me, Steam Friends, or Anyone options.
- Only me – Steam will only allow transfers on other devices you are currently logged in to with the same account (within your local network).
- Steam Friends – Allow transfers on other devices with your Steam friends logged in and connected to your local network.
- Anyone – Alow transfers to any other devices that are logged into Steam and connected to your local network. We used this option for this guide.
Do steps 1-3 on both the source and recipient devices.
4. On the game page, click Install and click the drive where you want to install the game.
5. Steam will automatically search your local network for Steam running on other devices with Game File Transfer over Local Network turned on.
6. Wait until the transfer is finished and play the game.
